SCNC Server Site Preparation

This document describes the site preparations required before installing an SCNC server. It is also important if you are installing network connectivity that you also do site preparation for the network stuff.

Location and Power

The SCNC server is a Compaq desktop with a 14" monitor. The console will need to be accessed only for backup. The system comes with a 450VA Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS). Only a single outlet is needed as the UPS will be plugged into the outlet and the remaining equipment will be plugged into the UPS.

Installation facts required:

  1. Server domain name (e.g. eaton.k12.mi.us)
  2. Server host name (e.g. scnc.eaton.k12.mi.us)
  3. Server IP address
  4. Netmask Netmask
  5. Gateway IP address
  6. Organization name

Note if you do not have a domain registered, that is not necessary to install the server. You should pick the domain before installing the server and then you can register your domain with Merit after the server is installed.

Network Arrangement

You should have a functional Internet connection before installing the SCNC server. The server supports either twisted pair or thin Ethernet. Make sure to have a cable run to the location where the server will be installed.

Other Details

In addition to the above, you will need a system (Mac or PC) capable of running TCP/IP and Netscape (dial-up is OK) to complete the system installation and to administer and test the system.

The installation kit consists of:

  1. Install tape or Backup tape
  2. Install floppy
  3. Installation Documentation

Also note that the most up to date server installation documentation (including this document) is available on-line at http://www.scnc.k12.mi.us/scnc_docs You may want to download and print the latest version of the documentation before proceeding.
