SCNC Software Installation

WARNING Installing will completely erase the current contents of the server! WARNING

Installation Prerequisites:

  1. Server host name
  2. Server domain name
  3. Server IP address
  4. Netmask
  5. Gateway IP address
  6. Organization name
  7. A machine other than the server running Netscape
  8. Install tape or Backup tape
  9. Install floppy

Installation Process:

  1. Insert floppy disk.

  2. Turn server on.

  3. Insert install tape.

  4. Select the Install main menu option.

  5. Select Yes when prompted to to continue.

  6. A status of the installation will be displayed. (Debug output can be viewed by holding down the alt key and pressing the f2. To return to the status display hold down the alt key and press the f1 key)

  7. When installation has completed successfully you will be notified. Select EXIT to return to the main menu. The install tape will automatically eject from the drive.

Configuration Process:

  1. Select the Configure System main menu option. If re-installing from a backup tape, it is not necessary to configure the system. Therefore, if re-installing skip directly to step 12.

  2. Enter all configuration information, and select OK to configure the system.

  3. A status of the configuration will be displayed.

  4. When configuration has completed successfully you will be notified. Select EXIT to return to the main menu.

  5. Remove the floppy disk and install tape (Note: the tape should automatically eject when installation is done).

  6. Select Quit to exit the main menu and reboot the server.

  7. The server should boot off of the hard drive and end up at a login prompt similar to this:

  8. To test networking login as user netstats. Note that the table is created every five minutes, so it may take up to five minutes for it to show up when logging in as netstats. You should see something similar to the following:

  9. The system software is now installed and configured.

Post-Installation Process:

  1. Web over to your server. The URL will be the host name of your server (selected while doing a configure) plus a :4. For example the training server's host name is scnc.k12.mi.us so the admin-web's URL would be http://scnc.k12.mi.us:4/ . You can also use the server's IP-Address. The training server's IP-Address is 35.8.2.53 so the example URL would be http://35.8.2.53:4/ .

  2. When prompted for a user and password enter a user name of deleteme with a password of rightnow .

  3. Create yourself an account using the Add a user function on the Account Administration page. You should see something similar to the following to signify the user has been created:
            Added user evans
            

  4. Add yourself to the admin group using the Change group membership function on the Account Administration page. You should see something similar to the following to signify the user has been added to the admin group:
            Group modified
            

    Note: If you chose the primary group of admin for the newly created user, you do not need to add yourself to the admin group.

  5. Fully exit all windows of your web browser, restart the web browser (neccessary to force the web browser to reauthenticate).

  6. Web back over to your servers admin-web's URL (same URL as in step 1). Log in using your newly created user and it's password.

  7. Delete the deleteme account using the Delete users function on the Account Administration page. You should see something similar to the following to signify the user has been deleted:
            User deleteme   .... Deleted
            

    Note: all installations will start out with this well known user and password, not deleting this account will create a huge security hole! If you are unable to delete the account, do not leave the server turned on.

  8. Select View/Change administrator mail list from the Server Administration page. Enter the name of the ID created above and select Add-User.


Main Menu Screen:

o "Install" option: Start installation process. Installing will COMPLETELY REPLACE any data currently on the disk. If re-installing from a backup tape, all files and accounts will be exactly as they were when the backup was made.

o "Configure System" option: Select this option to configure the SCNC server. This option should be selected after an installation from an Install tape (not from a Backup tape! When installing from a Backup tape the configuration is exactly as it was when the backup was made) or select first if one or more of the configuration items have changed.

o "Examine Tape" option: Select this option to examine the contents of any install or backup tape. The tape contents will be displayed.

o "Quit" option: Quit out of main menu and reboot the server. Remember to remove the floppy in order to boot off of the hard drive.

o "OK" button: Select menu option.

o "Cancel" button: Quit out of main menu and reboot the server (same functionality as selecting the "Quit" option).

o "EXIT" button: Exit and return to the main menu.


Installation Last Chance Screen:

o "Yes" button: Start installation from the tape currently in the tape drive. Installing will COMPLETELY REPLACE any data currently on the disk

o "No" button: Cancel the installation and return to the main menu.
You will be prompted one last time to make sure you want to install, and with a screen similar to this one:


Configure System Screen:

o Configuration items:

o "OK" button: Set configuration to the configuration items specified.

o "CANCEL" button: Cancel the configuration and return to the main menu.
