Web Page FAQ

FAQ on Setting Up Your Web Page

Creating the Pages

Web pages need to be in a specific format called HTML. The syntax and language can be downloaded and learned from the web. Use your search program to find these instructions. Some of the newer versions of word processing programs and graphics programs can automatically create this format. There are also programs specifically designed to create these pages. Some examples are: Hot Metal Pro@, Hot Dog@, Dreamweaver@, Microsoft Front Page@. One important thing to remember is that the very first web page, referred to as the Home Page, is always called "index.html". This will be used as the glue to connect to the other web pages. It is always a good idea to have a link in all subsequent pages back to the Home Page.

Note

  1. Insure that all file references and names are in lower case. This will prevent problems down the road.
  2. Use proper copyright symbols when appropriate and give credit to the original authors. You are persoanlly responsible for what you create.
  3. Pages that are found to be illegal, vulgar, slanderous or distasteful will be removed immediately without warning. Abusing the system WILL cause this system to be shutdown. It will create more headaches then it is worth for the volunteers. So if you like having web access then please be curteous and respectful.
  4. Posting viruses on to our system or through our system will be reported immediately to the authorities and prosecuted.

Moving the Pages to the MIND Server

For the remaining sections, be aware that the sftp and telnet programs are operated after you are already connected to the net, just like you normally would for browsing the web. Matter of fact, you can have your browser activated the whole time you are ftping and telneting.

Use the software package called SFTP to move your files to your personal "web" directory.

Reference the New Account Information Sheet that was sent to you. Notice the section Called "to ftp to MINDNET." This information will tell you how to set up the sftp program for accessing the MIND server. Once you are logged in under sftp you are automatically in your personal directory. Change the directory to "web", that you see in the upper right-hand box, by double clicking on it. Select the files that you want to move, by highlighting them, then click on the right arrow. Exit the sftp program.

E-mail Administrator

The last step is to activate your web pages. This is done by e-mailing the system administrator at support@mindnet.org that you want your pages activated. Please include your phone number in the e-mail. Remember that you are limited to a total disk space of 100 meg. This includes your e-mail, so download it and keep your in-box clean. If you run out of space, you will not be able to receive any more mail messages. Additional space is available.
